Renewing Your Learner Permit

How to renew before it expires, what documents you need, and the process.

Last updated: February 2026

When to Renew

A learner permit is valid for 2 years. You can renew it up to 3 months before it expires. Don't let it lapse — driving on an expired learner permit is an offence.

Important: If your learner permit has been expired for more than 5 years, you may need to retake the theory test before applying for a new one.

How to Renew

Visit your nearest NDLS centre with the following:

  • Current or expired learner permit
  • Photo ID — Passport or Public Services Card
  • Fee: €35

You can book an appointment at ndls.ie.

Tip: If you have a Public Services Card with photo, the renewal process is quick — usually under 15 minutes at the NDLS centre.

Do I Need a New Theory Test?

No, you do not need to retake the theory test to renew your learner permit, as long as your permit has not been expired for more than 5 years.
