Last updated: February 2026

How to Book

The Driver Theory Test is managed by Prometric on behalf of the RSA. You can book online at theorytest.ie or by phone at 1890 606 106.

When booking, you will need:

  • Your PPSN (Personal Public Service Number)
  • A valid email address
  • A debit or credit card for payment

Cost

  • Car or Motorcycle theory test: €45
  • Truck or Bus theory test: €72
Note: If you need to take both the Car and Truck/Bus theory tests, you must book and pay for them separately.

Test Centres

There are theory test centres throughout Ireland. When booking, you can choose the most convenient location and time. Popular centres include Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, and Waterford, but there are also smaller centres in most counties.

What to Bring on Test Day

You must bring acceptable photo ID. The following are accepted:

  • Valid passport (Irish or foreign)
  • Irish Public Services Card (with photo)
  • Current Irish driving licence or learner permit
  • National identity card from an EU/EEA country
Important: If you do not bring valid photo ID, you will not be allowed to sit the test and you will lose your fee. The name on your ID must match the name you used when booking.

The Test Format

  • Number of questions: 40
  • Time allowed: 45 minutes
  • Pass mark: 35 out of 40 (87.5%)
  • Format: Multiple choice (touch screen computer)

Questions are drawn randomly from the full question bank. Each question has four possible answers and you must select the correct one. You can flag questions and return to them before submitting.

Rescheduling or Cancelling

You can reschedule or cancel your test online at theorytest.ie. You must do so at least 5 working days before your test date to receive a full refund or free reschedule.

After the Test

You will receive your result immediately on screen after completing the test. If you pass, you will also receive a pass certificate by post, which you need to apply for your learner permit. The certificate is valid for 2 years.

Tip: Don't wait too long after passing to apply for your learner permit. Your theory test certificate expires after 2 years, and if it lapses you'll have to sit the test again.
