When Would You Need to Add a Category?
If you already hold a learner permit or full licence in one category (e.g. Category B for cars) and want to learn to drive a different type of vehicle, you need to add that category to your permit.
Common scenarios:
- Car licence holder wanting to ride a motorcycle (Category A)
- Car licence holder wanting to drive a truck (Category C)
- Car licence holder wanting to drive a bus (Category D)
Requirements
- Pass the relevant theory test — You need to pass the theory test for the new category
- Meet medical requirements — Categories C and D require a medical report
- Visit an NDLS centre with your current licence/permit, theory test certificate, and ID
- Fee: €35
Note: If you hold an EU/EEA driving licence in another category and want to add a Category BE, C, D, or bus/truck learner permit, there is a specific process. See the NDLS guide for EU/EEA licence holders.
