Essential Driver Training (EDT) Explained

Everything you need to know about the 12 mandatory driving lessons for learner drivers in Ireland.

Last updated: February 2026

What is EDT?

Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a mandatory programme of 12 structured driving lessons that all learner car drivers must complete before they can sit their driving test. It was introduced by the RSA to ensure all new drivers receive a consistent standard of professional instruction.

EDT applies to Category B (car) learner permit holders only. Motorcycle learners have a separate Initial Basic Training (IBT) programme. Truck and bus learners have different requirements.

The 12 EDT Lessons

Each lesson focuses on a specific set of driving skills:

  • Lesson 1: Car controls and safety checks
  • Lesson 2: Correct positioning, mirrors, and observation
  • Lesson 3: Changing direction — turning left and right
  • Lesson 4: Progression management — speed and gears
  • Lesson 5: Correct positioning on the road
  • Lesson 6: Anticipation and reaction — dealing with hazards
  • Lesson 7: Sharing the road with other users
  • Lesson 8: Driving in traffic
  • Lesson 9: Driving at higher speeds (dual carriageways/motorways)
  • Lesson 10: Night driving
  • Lesson 11: Driving in adverse weather conditions
  • Lesson 12: Review and assessment of driving skills

Who Needs to Complete EDT?

EDT is mandatory for all first-time Category B (car) learner permit holders. You must complete all 12 lessons before you can apply for your driving test.

Finding an Approved Instructor (ADI)

EDT lessons must be taken with an RSA-Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). You can search for approved instructors in your area on the RSA website.

When choosing an instructor, consider:

  • Check they are on the RSA's official ADI register
  • Ask about their pass rate and experience
  • Compare prices — lessons typically cost €30-€50 per hour
  • Check availability and proximity to your location
  • Read reviews from other learners
Tip: Your EDT instructor will record each completed lesson in your official EDT logbook and on the RSA's online system. Make sure every lesson is logged properly — you'll need proof of completion when applying for your driving test.

Cost of EDT

EDT lesson prices are set by individual instructors. Typical prices range from €30 to €50 per lesson, so the full 12 lessons will cost approximately €360 to €600.

Some instructors offer package deals for all 12 lessons at a discounted rate.

How Long Does EDT Take?

Each EDT lesson is a minimum of 1 hour. There is no minimum time gap between lessons, but it is recommended to space them out to allow time to practice between each one. Most people complete EDT over 3-6 months.
