Each question shows a sign and four names to choose from. You find out straight away whether you were right, and what the sign actually requires of you. A round is 20 signs drawn from all 134 in the road signs guide, or you can quiz yourself on one type of sign at a time.
How the quiz works
There is no timer and no pass mark. Answer, read the explanation, and move on when you are ready. At the end you get your score and a list of the signs you missed, each linked to its entry in the guide so you can go over it.
The choices always come from the same family of signs, so a warning sign is tested against other warning signs. Signs that differ only in a detail, such as the same arm signal seen from the front and from behind, never appear as choices in the same question.
Quiz by type of sign
- Regulatory signs. Mostly circular. A red ring forbids, a blue disc instructs.
- Warning signs. Yellow diamond with a black border and a black symbol.
- Information and motorway signs. Rectangular. Blue for motorways, white or green elsewhere.
- Road markings. Painted on the surface, not on a post.
- Hand signals and traffic signals. Given by a Garda, a driver or a cyclist, or shown by a light.

Road signs on the real theory test
The Driver Theory Test is 40 questions in 45 minutes, and you need 35 correct to pass. Signs come up throughout it, often inside a question about what to do rather than as a picture to name. Knowing them by sight is the start. A mock test checks whether you can use them under exam conditions, alongside everything else the test covers.
