Irish Driver Theory Test Pass Mark & Format

Pass marks, exam structure, official fees by category, what the questions cover, and how results and certificates work.

Pass mark (car and motorcycle)

For the standard Car & Motorcycle theory test (categories B and A, booked as BW or AM on theorytest.ie), you must answer 35 out of 40 questions correctly. That is 87.5%. Each question is multiple choice, typically with four options and one correct answer.

Remember: There is no extra credit for a higher score — you need at least 35 correct to pass. In practice, a small buffer above 35 helps because a few tough or unfamiliar questions are normal on the day.

Test format (car and motorcycle)

The car and motorcycle exam is:

  • 40 multiple-choice questions
  • 45 minutes total time
  • Computer-based at an official test centre (touch screen)

You can usually skip or flag questions and return to them before submitting. When you are ready, you finish the test on the computer and your result is processed straight away.

Fees and formats by category

Official booking fees (check the booking page for the latest amounts) are commonly structured as follows:

Test typeTypical fee
Car / Motorcycle (categories B and A)€45
Truck or Bus separately (Category C or Category D)€72
Combined Bus & Truck (Category CD)€84

Truck and bus tests use a different exam length from the car test: Category C or D on its own is typically 100 questions in 120 minutes with a pass of 74 correct. The combined CD test is usually 140 questions in 180 minutes with 104 correct required to pass. Always confirm the format shown when you book on the official theory test site.

Topic categories (question bank)

Questions are drawn from the RSA question bank and grouped into broad areas. For car and motorcycle, material is organised into five categories:

  • Control of Vehicle
  • Legal Matters & Rules of the Road
  • Managing Risk
  • Safe and Responsible Driving
  • Technical Matters

When you practise on our practice questions, you can work through these areas systematically so nothing is left to chance on test day.

Results and pass certificate

After you submit your answers, you receive your result immediately at the test centre — you will know whether you passed or failed before you leave. You also get feedback on how you performed across topic areas, which is useful if you need to retake the test.

If you pass, your theory test certificate is valid for two years. You should apply for the relevant learner permit within that period; after two years you would need to sit and pass the theory test again.

How Ireland compares to other countries

Pass marks and exam lengths vary internationally, so scores are not directly comparable. One useful reference is the UK car theory test: candidates must score 43 out of 50 on the multiple-choice section (86%), in addition to a separate hazard-perception part. Ireland's car test uses fewer questions (40) but a slightly higher percentage required (87.5% for 35/40).

If you are comparing apps or revision material from abroad, check that they target the Irish RSA question bank and the correct category — rules and signs differ from the UK and other markets.

Practical preparation tip

Tip: Aim to score 38 or more out of 40 on several full mock theory tests before you pay to book the real exam. That margin above the pass mark of 35 gives room for nerves, unfamiliar wording, or an off day — and matches how many successful candidates prepare using timed practice alongside topic-based practice.
