What Happens on Theory Test Day

Before You Go

Make sure you have the following ready the night before:

Valid photo ID: passport, Public Services Card (with photo), current Irish driving licence, or EU/EEA national identity card
Your booking confirmation: either printed or on your phone (not strictly required but useful)
Know the address and location of your test centre

No valid photo ID = No test. You will not be allowed to sit the test without acceptable identification, and you will forfeit your fee.

Arriving at the Centre

Aim to arrive 15-20 minutes before your scheduled time. When you arrive:

Check in at the reception desk
Present your photo ID
You may be asked to store your phone and personal belongings in a locker
You will be directed to a waiting area until your session begins

Note: Mobile phones, smart watches, and other electronic devices are not allowed in the testing room. Leave them in the locker provided.

In the Testing Room

You will be seated at an individual computer workstation with a touch screen. Before the timed test begins, there is a short tutorial to familiarise you with the system: how to select answers, flag questions, and navigate between questions.

The test itself:

40 multiple-choice questions displayed one at a time
4 answer options per question, select one
45 minutes total time (shown on a countdown timer on screen)
You can flag questions and return to them later
You can change your answers at any time before submitting
Some questions include images (road signs, road markings, dashboard lights)

Tips During the Test

Read each question carefully: don't rush
If you're unsure, flag the question and move on: come back to it later
Use the review screen at the end to check you haven't missed any
There's no penalty for guessing: never leave a question blank
You have plenty of time: most people finish with 10-15 minutes to spare

Tip: The review screen at the end shows you which questions are answered, flagged, or unanswered. Use it to double-check before you submit.

Getting Your Results

Your result appears immediately on screen after you submit. You will see:

Your total score (e.g. 37/40)
Whether you passed or failed
A breakdown by topic category

If you pass, you will receive a theory test pass certificate by post within a few days. This certificate is valid for 2 years and is required to apply for your learner permit.

If You Don't Pass

There is no limit on attempts, and no law stops you sitting it again, but the RSA advises applying after three days rather than the same day, so you have time to revise. The €45 fee applies each time. Review the topic areas where you scored poorly, do some targeted practice, and try again. Many people pass on their second attempt after focused study.
